Bandekallu Gudda
BandeKallu Gudda
BandeKallu Gudda provides a beautiful hiking trails around the Mallandur area, in close proximity to Muthodi. “Bande Kallu Gudda” is an interesting hiking place from Chikmagalur. Surrounded by coffee plantations, the road will turn into a steep gully-eroded jeep track and gains significant elevation within a km of distance, to end in a clearing on to the shoulder of the Bandekallu hillock. This stretch is indeed inviting for hard-core off-roaders, and old Willys jeep. Beyond the clearing, which itself is an excellent campsite overlooking the estates below, is a narrow path snaking into the shaded undergrowth. Beyond a 100 metres or so emerges the exposed slick rock that we have to ascend to enjoy splendid views of the countryside. The ascent is quick and quite easy, and the howling winds at the top adds a faint aroma to the atmosphere.
Looking North, we could the see the lower portion of the Jaagara valley, with all its giants, Mullayanagiri, Seethalayyanagiri, Mallandur-Muthodi road, the fringes of the Jagara valley, and faintly on the horizon, the silohuette of the upper arm of the Jaagara Valley, that being the Hebbegiri range.
Looking East, the plains of Chikmagalur were basking in the morning sun, and the western areas towards Khandya and the surrounding country were slowly waking up from the shadows of the hills, with the clouds lifting into view.
Looking towards the South from the summit of Bande Kallu Gudda, a distinctively head-shaped mountain that the locals probably call it “Maadalakallu Gudda” and apparently it has never been climbed till date we guess! There are no religious or local beliefs that restrict the access to this place, but no one has ever tried cutting through the undergrowth to create a trail.
Halebidu
Halebidu the ancient Hoysala capital houses the ornate Hoysaleswara and Kedareswara temples, and is one of the well visited tourist attractions of Karnataka. Halebidu is located at a distance of 149 km from Mysore and 31 km from Hassan. The Karnataka State Tourism Bureau offers a rather hectic tour package (from Mysore) covering Sravanabelagola, Halebidu and Belur in one day.
The Hoysaleswara temple dates back to the 12th century CE. It was built by Ketamalla a minister of Vishnuvardhana the Hoysala ruler who also built the Belur temple and the Mahabaleshwar temple at Chamundi Hills near Mysore. Halebidu was sacked by the armies of Malik Kafur in early fourteenth century, after which it fell into a state of disrepair and neglect.
The Hoysaleswara temple enshrines Hoysaleswara and Santaleswara. Hoysaleswara is named after the builder Vishnuvardhana Hoysala and Santaleswara after his wife, Queen Santala. The sancta are built on a stellar plan, with a sukhanasi, navaranga and Nandi Mandapa. Each of these (temples) resembles the Belur Chennakesava temple in plan.
The Hoysaleswara temple is a masterpiece, studded with a profusion of carvings. Thousands of figures appear on its walls. The basement of the temple has the most richly sculptured friezes. Horsemen charge, war elephants charge, all in stone. Scenes from the Ramayana and the Mahabharata add to the grandeur.
Art historian James Fergusson writes of Halebidu thus The Hoysaleswara temple may be probably considered as one of the most marvellous exhibitions of human labor to be found even the patient east. The mode in which the eastern face is broken up by the larger masses, so as to give height and play of light and shade, is a better way of accomplishing what the Gothc artists attempted by their projections. This however is surpassed by the western front, where the variety of outline and arrangement and subordination of the various facets in which it is disposed, must be considered as a masterpiece of design in its class.
If the friezes were to be spread olong a plain surface, it would lose more than half its effect, while the vertical angles, without interfering with the continuity of the frieze give height and strength to the whole composition. The disposition of the horizontal lines of the lower friezes is equally effective. Here again, the artistic combination of horizongal and vertical lines and the play of outline and of light and shate far surpass anything in gothic art.
There are pierced windows on the walls, about a meter high each, with divinities set on pedestals with canopies above. The south door is beautifully sculptured.
The Kedareswara temple built by King Ballala II, at Halebidu now in ruins is considered to be a a gem of architecture. As with the Hoysaleswara temple, this temple has classic friezes, and scenes from the epics. There are a hundred and eighty images set under floral toranas in the upper parts of the walls. Also nearby, are Jain temples dedicated to Parsvanatha, Santhanatha and Adinatha.

MOREAngadi Hoysala Temple
Angadi which means a market place or shop is 18 km south of Mudigere Town. The shrine here has pillars of granite with cylindrical shafts and hemispherical moldings. Three other ruined temples were dedicated to Keshava, Veerabhadra, and Mallikarjuna.
When a dynasty owes its origins to a myth, one has to see the place where the story was set. It is believed that Sala’s Sosevur is Angadi, a small hamlet in Chikmagalur district of Karnataka. Deep inside coffee plantations lies the temple of the Goddess, along with the ruins of more temples and Jain basadis. The priest will narrate the story and show you the temple where Sala killed the tiger. Although historians dismiss the myth, they do believe that the basadis here are the earliest of the monuments built by the Hoysalas. Small mud roads take you uphill into dense coffee plantations. As you follow the roads, you reach a rugged path that takes you to the basadis. Another path leads you to the three temples, which were completely in ruins when I chanced upon them. They are the Chennakesava, Patalarudreshwara and Mallikarjuna temples. Surrounding you are verdant plantations and all that you can hear is the chirping of birds, with hardly a soul around.
The main attraction of Angadi is Durga or Vasantha Parameshwari Temple located on a hillock. This temple has pillars of granite with cylindrical beams and hemi spherical moldings. The temple has been renovated and well maintained.
